  • I have been placed on predisone for asthma and am having very bad reactions. I ended up in an ambulance with what felt like a heart attack. Three days later upon release I was told to start the predisone again though I was not given it in the hospital. I am afraid to take it but cannot breath without it. Does anyone know who I can call or what I can do. My doctor feels it is necessary to get asthma under control. Are there any substitutes for predisone. Thank you for any advice or help.

Three days is a long time to be in the hospital these days, they must have been treating you so something.

We're not doctors here and cannot give you medical advice. You might want to seek out another doctor to care for you. I don't blame you for not wanting to take the prednisone... These days there are a lot of drugs available to treat asthma... you might want to see if you can get to a pulmonologist or an asthma/allergy specialist.

    Good luck!

  • what are the effects of a depressed person taking prozac and giving a corticosteroid shot. side effects? precautions? can you give me these answers? and where can i find them documented? what also are the warnings?

These are questions only your doctor can answer. This depends on the amount of Prozac, the reason for prescribing the steroids and your own personal history. Ask your doctor and/or whoever is prescribing these treatments.

  • What are the side effects of these medications: Ketoconazole and Metyrapone?

Ketoconazole (Nizoral): The most common side effect is nausea and abnormalities in liver function. Before this medication is taken, a blood test should be measured to make sure there are no liver abnormalities. If the patient develops fatigue or jaundice, liver tests should be measured again and the medication stopped. Other side effects include vomiting, abdominal pain and itching.

Metyrapone (Metopirone): nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If these block adrenal gland cortisol production completely, adrenal insufficiency occurs.

Dexamethasone (a synthetic cortisol drug) is often given (in a small dose) to protect against developing adrenal insufficiency or the dose can be reduced. A morning blood cortisol level is helpful to determine if the dose is too high. A 24 hour urine cortisol measurement is the best test to determine the effectiveness of medical treatment. If the urine cortisol level remains elevated, the dose of medication may need to be increased.
